Samsung Adopts Silicon-Carbon Batteries in Galaxy Z Fold 8 Series
The Korean giant finally matches Chinese rivals with higher-capacity cells that don't add bulk to its 2026 foldables.
Samsung entered the silicon-carbon battery race, equipping its Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8 with the higher-density anode technology competitors have used for generations. The announcement, confirmed by Samsung executives at Galaxy Unpacked 2026, marks a turning point for a company whose foldable battery capacities have trailed behind Honor and Oppo.
Capacity Gains Without Bulk
The silicon-carbon anode lets Samsung pack more power into the same physical envelope. The Z Fold 8 Ultra now carries a 5,000mAh battery, up from 4,400mAh in the Fold 7. The standard Z Fold 8 reaches 4,800mAh, also a significant jump from its predecessor's 4,400mAh. The Z Flip 8 maintains 4,300mAh — unchanged from the Flip 7 — but benefits from the technology's space-saving properties to preserve its slim profile.
For years, Samsung's foldables lagged behind Chinese OEMs that normalized silicon-carbon cells to address the primary consumer complaint about foldable devices: battery life. The Z 8 series closes that gap.
Charging Architecture Overhaul
The transition pairs with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor and a dual-path charging architecture that divides power across separate paths to reduce electrical stress on each cell. The Z Fold 8 series supports 45W wired charging. Samsung's official claim cites 65 percent charge in 30 minutes; independent testing by Android Authority and TechRepublic observed approximately 67 percent for the Z Fold 8 Ultra under test conditions.
Wireless charging also receives an upgrade. The Z Fold 8 series supports 20W wireless charging, compared to 15W on the Fold 7.
System-Level Engineering
"We embarked on system-level innovation that covers all the components that go into the battery end-to-end, and this allowed us to meet our standards," said BD Yang, Samsung Corporate EVP and Deputy Head of Core Component Technology.
That innovation includes an optimized cathode, an electrolyte protective layer, and a separator designed to stabilize the silicon-carbon cells — components Samsung engineered to meet its durability standards for foldable devices that undergo repeated flexing.
The devices run Android 17 with One UI 9, completing a platform-wide efficiency push that Samsung hopes will finally silence critics who have long pointed to battery capacity as the foldable lineup's weakest link.
