Lockheed Unveils MORFIUS X-Rotor, Claims 50-Drone Neutralization Per Mission
Reusable high-power microwave interceptor aims to shift cost-exchange ratio against drone swarms at Farnborough 2026.
Lockheed Martin unveiled the MORFIUS X-Rotor at the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow on July 20, presenting a reusable ground-launched interceptor that uses high-power microwave (HPM) technology to disable enemy drone swarms.
The company states the system can neutralize more than 50 drones in a single flight using a "one-to-many" engagement approach, departing from traditional kinetic interceptors that destroy one target per missile. The X-Rotor is designed for field recovery and reuse, which Lockheed says reduces the cost per kill compared to single-use munitions.
Sensor-Agnostic Architecture
The MORFIUS X-Rotor is sensor and command-and-control agnostic, integrating with existing military sensors and networks without requiring proprietary guidance systems. This allows defense operators to deploy the interceptor within current infrastructure rather than building new tracking and fire-control pipelines.
The technology builds on the MORFIUS HPM program, under development and flight testing since 2017. Lockheed Martin conducted recent flight evaluations in Arizona, California, and Oklahoma, testing flight performance, intercept conditions, and lethality parameters.
Shifting the Economics of Air Defense
The system addresses a growing asymmetry in modern warfare: defenders traditionally fire expensive missiles at low-cost commercial drones, creating an unsustainable cost-exchange ratio. By using a reusable HPM payload that disables electronics without kinetic warheads, Lockheed aims to flip that economics in the defender's favor.
"MORFIUS sets a new benchmark for counter-drone capability—delivering a high kill rate while keeping the cost per kill low," said Randy Crites, Vice President and General Manager of Advanced Programs at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.
"By leveraging a lightweight, field-reusable high-power microwave architecture, we provide the most effective, low-cost solution on the market today," Crites added.
Roadmap Alignment and Prototype Status
The X-Rotor aligns with the U.S. Department of Defense's 2025–2028 Rapid Response Counter-UAS Roadmap, which prioritizes affordable and scalable solutions to combat drone swarm proliferation. However, the system remains in the prototype acceleration phase. Lockheed Martin has not announced confirmed customers, delivery timelines, or specific unit pricing.
Performance claims—including the 50-plus drone neutralization figure—remain manufacturer assertions. The company has not published detailed test reports specifying threat types, environmental conditions, or exact kill counts, and no independent Pentagon, GAO, or third-party test data has verified the claimed capability.
The MORFIUS X-Rotor enters a crowded counter-UAS market as militaries worldwide seek scalable defenses against increasingly cheap and numerous unmanned systems. Whether the system can transition from prototype to deployed capability while maintaining its cost advantages remains an open question.
