In the INTerpath-001 trial, which included 1,137 patients, Moderna and Merck tested a personalized mRNA vaccine known as intismeran (mRNA-4157). The treatment is administered in combination with Keytruda (pembrolizumab), an immunotherapy drug developed by Merck. According to trial data, this combined approach is used to reduce the risk of melanoma recurrence and metastasis by leveraging the patient's own biological profile.
The Mechanics of Precision Oncology
Traditional cancer treatments have historically relied on a one-size-fits-all approach, often utilizing broad chemotherapy or general immunotherapies. The new platform replaces this with a targeted process: clinicians sequence the DNA of a patient's specific tumor to identify unique mutations, known as neoantigens.
