The rise of generative artificial intelligence is forcing a reckoning in U.S. college admissions, prompting a shift back toward mandatory standardized testing. As AI tools make it increasingly difficult for admissions officers to verify the authenticity of application essays, universities are returning to proctored exams to ensure objective academic validation.

This reversal follows a period of widespread deregulation; approximately 90 percent of schools transitioned to test-optional policies following the Covid-19 lockdowns. However, the tide is turning as institutions struggle to distinguish between a student's genuine intellectual capacity and AI-generated content. The University of Pennsylvania, for example, has already reinstituted testing requirements for the current school year.

The Erosion of Traditional Metrics

For years, higher education trended toward 'test-blind' or 'test-optional' models to foster diversity and accessibility. This shift placed greater weight on high school grade point averages (GPAs) and personal narratives. However, the combination of systemic grade inflation and the proliferation of AI has undermined these metrics.

Jim Wismer, Director of Community Relations with the National Test Prep Association, argues that AI-generated essays and grade inflation make proctored standardized tests the most reliable predictor of college performance. Wismer notes that there is now precious little evidence on a typical application of a student's ability to perform intellectual work without the assistance of AI. Because students are using AI to submit work that is not their own for both essays and school assignments, Wismer contends that colleges urgently need third-party, independent validation of academic performance.

The Predictive Power of Testing

Proponents of standardized tests argue that proctored environments provide the only AI-proof method of assessment. The data suggests these tests offer significant utility; according to a report from Opportunity Insights, standardized test scores are four times more predictive of academic achievement at 'Ivy-Plus' colleges than high school grades.

By relying on a controlled environment where AI cannot be utilized, universities can establish a baseline of competency that is not skewed by the varying standards of different high schools or the capabilities of large language models.

Implications for Higher Education

This shift highlights a fundamental tension between the desire to expand educational access and the necessity of quality control. If universities cannot accurately gauge a student's actual ability, they risk admitting candidates who are unprepared for the rigor of college-level coursework. Such a mismatch could lead to increased dropout rates and a rise in unsustainable student debt for those unable to keep pace with the curriculum.

What to Watch

As more institutions evaluate their admissions criteria, the industry will be watching to see if the return to testing creates a new barrier for underrepresented students or if it provides a necessary corrective to the 'AI era' of applications. While some universities have already made the move, it remains to be seen how many of the remaining test-optional schools will follow suit in the coming academic cycles.
