AI Hedge Fund Situational Awareness Sells Public Portfolio to Citadel After Steep Losses
Founder Leopold Aschenbrenner's fund sees assets plunge from $45 billion to $10 billion amid an AI infrastructure rout.
Situational Awareness, the AI-focused hedge fund founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, has sold the majority of its public stock portfolio to Ken Griffin’s Citadel. The move follows significant losses driven by a sharp decline in AI infrastructure equities.
Reports from TechCrunch and Business Insider indicate the fund's assets under management peaked at $45 billion before plummeting to approximately $10 billion following the transaction with Citadel. Despite the collapse of its public holdings, the firm retains critical private assets, most notably a significant stake in AI lab Anthropic. This volatility follows a period of extreme growth; the fund reportedly returned 439% for the year through June before the market turned.
The Rise of a Prodigy
Leopold Aschenbrenner, 25, entered the financial world with a level of notoriety rarely seen in hedge fund launches. A former member of OpenAI’s "superalignment" team and a Columbia University valedictorian who enrolled at age 15, Aschenbrenner gained fame after publishing a 165-page essay titled "Situational Awareness." In the paper, he argued that the scaling of AI would require unprecedented investments in semiconductors, energy, and compute.
Backed by high-profile investors including Jane Street, Nat Friedman, and the Collison brothers of Stripe, Aschenbrenner launched his fund in 2024. His strategy leaned heavily into the very infrastructure he championed in his writing. While this approach initially yielded massive returns, it became a liability as public markets began to question whether the massive capital expenditures in AI would produce near-term revenue.
Market Implications
This meltdown underscores the inherent volatility of the "AI bubble" and the dangers of high leverage within specialized thematic funds. The acquisition of the portfolio by Citadel highlights a broader trend of "distressed asset" gathering, where financial giants with deep pockets can absorb positions and wait out sector downturns that bankrupt smaller, more aggressive players.
The Path Forward
Situational Awareness is now in a precarious position where its survival may depend on the private market. With its public portfolio largely gone, the fund's valuation is now heavily tied to the potential IPO of Anthropic. Aschenbrenner maintains close ties to the lab; he is engaged to Avital Balwit, the chief of staff for Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. Investors will be watching whether the shift from public infrastructure stocks to private AI labs provides the necessary lifeline for the firm.
