AI Toilet Trackers Bring Gut Health Monitoring to the Bathroom
New devices from Kohler Health and Throne use cameras and sensors to analyze waste, sparking a debate over privacy and clinical utility.
The latest frontier in the wellness tracker boom has arrived in the bathroom, as companies launch AI-powered devices designed to monitor gut health from the toilet bowl. These tools aim to automate the tracking of biological signals that were previously only observed manually or in a clinical setting.
Companies including Kohler Health and Throne have introduced devices that clip onto toilets to analyze stool and urine. Using a combination of light sensors and cameras, the hardware records video of deposits to analyze color, consistency, and other metrics via proprietary algorithms. Users receive "report cards" on their hydration and gut health through connected apps. Kohler Health sells its tracker for $449 with a $130 annual family membership, while Throne offers its device for $399 with a $70 annual membership. Throne recently raised $10 million in a July Series A funding round. According to Kohler Health, its tracker is already capable of alerting users to the detection of blood in the toilet bowl.
The Wellness Shift
This technology follows a broader trend of personalized health optimization, mirroring the rise of wearable trackers for heart rate, sleep, and blood glucose. The goal is to remove the friction of manual health logging. "No one wants to journal about their poop," said Throne CEO Scott Hickle.
However, the shift toward automated monitoring faces skepticism from the medical community, which views these tools as inferior to established clinical diagnostics like lab-based stool tests or colonoscopies. Some experts argue that the AI does not provide significant scientific advantages over simple observation. Daniel Freedberg, a gastroenterologist and spokesperson for the American Gastroenterological Association, noted that users can simply look at their own stool, questioning whether AI brings "a lot of new science to this."
Privacy and Cost Concerns
The move toward continuous monitoring of private biosignals raises significant questions about the "medicalization" of daily life for healthy individuals. Beyond the utility of the data, the cost of these non-clinical screening tools is a point of contention. Gianluca Ianiro, an assistant professor of gastroenterology, argued that while screening tests should be non-invasive, they should also be affordable, stating that these devices are "not cheap."
Furthermore, privacy advocates have raised concerns regarding the storage of highly sensitive biological data. Because these devices rely on subscription paywalls to provide ongoing analysis, users are essentially paying for the long-term storage and processing of their most private health metrics by private corporations.

As these devices move from early adopters to the broader consumer market, the industry will likely face increased scrutiny over the accuracy of its algorithms compared to medical-grade equipment. It remains to be seen if these companies can prove a tangible health outcome that justifies the high entry cost and recurring membership fees, or if the technology will remain a niche luxury for the wellness-obsessed.
