Alibaba Cloud Breaks 'Walled Gardens' With Cross-Platform AI Digital Employees

Alibaba Cloud has updated its QoderWake tool to enable the creation of AI "digital employees" that can operate across China's three dominant workplace communication platforms. This strategic move allows AI agents to function within Alibaba's DingTalk, ByteDance's Feishu, and Tencent's WeCom, signaling a shift toward cross-platform interoperability for enterprise AI.
According to the South China Morning Post, QoderWake allows users to generate fully functioning AI workers using only a single-line role description. These agents are designed to autonomously absorb context from group chats, calendars, and shared documents across the supported platforms. To accelerate deployment, Alibaba offers 10 ready-to-use roles, including data analysts, product managers, UI designers, and both front- and back-end developers. The scale of adoption is already significant; since its April release, QoderWake has deployed nearly 100,000 digital employees who have executed approximately 2 million tasks.
The Pivot to Enterprise AI
This development arrives as Chinese tech giants aggressively pivot toward monetizing AI through complex enterprise workflows and business-facing applications. Alibaba is not alone in this scaling effort. Tencent has recently launched an open platform for its WorkBuddy assistant, while ByteDance has introduced Doubao Work, a tool focused on workflow management and autonomous task execution. The competition has shifted from basic chatbots to sophisticated agents capable of managing professional roles.
Eroding the Walled Garden
For years, the Chinese internet ecosystem has been defined by "walled gardens," where tech giants restricted data and service interoperability to maintain platform exclusivity. By allowing QoderWake agents to operate on rival apps, Alibaba is prioritizing the capture of the enterprise productivity market over the traditional model of platform isolation. This suggests a transition toward "agentic ecosystems," where the primary value is derived from the capability and utility of the AI agent rather than the specific platform it inhabits.
