Amazon is shutting down Mechanical Turk, the crowdsourcing marketplace that for nearly two decades served as a primary engine for human-powered data processing. The platform is scheduled to cease operations on September 30, 2026.
Launched in 2005, Amazon Mechanical Turk allowed businesses to outsource "Human Intelligence Tasks" (HITs)—micro-tasks such as image tagging and sentiment analysis—to a global workforce. At its peak, the platform supported more than 500,000 contributors. Jeff Bezos famously described the service as "artificial artificial intelligence," a nod to the way the platform used human labor to simulate capabilities that computers were not yet capable of performing independently.
The Bridge to Modern AI
Mechanical Turk functioned as a critical bridge between the software limitations of the early 2000s and the current era of generative AI. By leveraging a massive pool of human workers, Amazon provided the infrastructure necessary for the large-scale data labeling required to train early machine learning models.
