Apple Launches Siri AI in iOS 27 With Deep On-Device Context

Apple is launching a fully revamped assistant called Siri AI as part of iOS 27, marking a strategic shift toward a context-aware AI agent. The update integrates deep on-device indexing and real-time awareness to move beyond the command-based system of previous years.

Siri AI now indexes personal on-device data—including emails, texts, and calendars—to answer highly specific questions, such as where a user agreed to meet a family member. The assistant also introduces on-screen awareness, enabling users to summarize text within Safari or identify landmarks in images without the need for screenshots. Furthermore, a new "Siri mode" within the Camera app allows users to query objects in their field of view, such as requesting nutritional information from a physical menu.

Crucially, Siri AI now handles text generation and editing natively. This removes the previous reliance on a ChatGPT plug-in for these specific tasks, bringing generative capabilities directly into the core OS. Beyond the assistant, the update introduces a "Liquid Glass" design for the system UI, which includes a transparency slider.

The Hardware Divide

These advanced capabilities are not available to all users. Due to strict hardware requirements, Siri AI is restricted to the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and newer models. This compatibility list extends to the iPhone 18 Pro and the new foldable iPhone Duo. By limiting these features to high-end silicon, Apple is leveraging its hardware-software integration to maintain performance and privacy.

Since its debut in 2011, Siri has struggled to keep pace with modern generative AI rivals.
