Apple Music to Mandate 'Made With AI' Labels for Generative Content

The streaming giant is shifting AI transparency tags from voluntary to mandatory as AI-generated uploads surge despite low listener engagement.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · September 7, 2026

Apple Music is transitioning its "AI Transparency Tags" from a voluntary system to a mandatory requirement for all content providers. The move ensures that tracks materially generated using artificial intelligence or primarily derived from generative AI services are clearly identified for listeners.

According to an email sent to partners, content providers must now include these tags whenever AI was used to create a material portion of a track. Once implemented, these tags will trigger visible "Made With AI" labels on the platform. These consumer-facing labels are expected to appear later this year, in 2026.

The AI Upload Surge

The policy shift comes amid a stark divide between the volume of AI content being uploaded and its actual popularity. More than a third of the music Apple Music receives each month is classified as "100% AI" music. However, this massive influx of content has not translated into significant listener engagement. Oliver Schusser, Head of Apple Music, noted that the actual usage of AI music on the platform is "really tiny," accounting for less than 0.5% of total usage.

Industry-Wide Crackdown

Apple's decision aligns with a broader industry trend and a proposal from a coalition led by the RIAA and IFPI. Other major streaming platforms have already adopted various strategies to manage generative content. Spotify has implemented badging for AI artist profiles, while Deezer utilizes detection tools to identify approximately 60,000 AI tracks daily.

Some platforms have taken more aggressive stances to protect human artists. TIDAL has begun stripping royalties from AI-generated music, and services such as Bandcamp and Qobuz have banned fully AI-generated music from their platforms entirely.

Implications for the Market

By moving AI disclosure from a behind-the-scenes optional process to a mandatory consumer-facing feature, Apple is addressing growing industry concerns regarding deepfakes and artist attribution. The requirement forces a level of transparency that prevents AI-generated works from masquerading as human-made compositions, potentially shifting how listeners perceive and value digital artistry.

What to Watch

As the "Made With AI" labels roll out later this year, the industry will be watching to see if transparency reduces the volume of AI uploads or if it legitimizes generative music as a distinct category. While Apple has mandated the tags, the effectiveness of the system will depend on the accuracy of provider disclosures and the platform's ability to enforce these standards across its vast library of content.
