AWS Previews Agentic Catalog Experience for Amazon Quick

New AI-powered workflow automates data catalog curation while keeping humans in the loop for validation.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · July 31, 2026

Amazon Web Services introduced a preview of the Agentic Catalog Experience, an AI-powered workflow built into Amazon Quick that automates data catalog preparation for business intelligence.

The feature targets data curators—typically BI engineers and analytics leads—who spend significant effort mapping table relationships and writing metadata descriptions before organizations can deploy generative AI tools for analytics.

How It Works

The agentic system automates three core tasks: discovering tables through natural language queries, inferring relationships including primary and foreign keys, and inheriting table and column descriptions from upstream catalogs. The workflow integrates with AWS Glue Data Catalog and Databricks Unity Catalog, pulling semantic metadata directly from existing data governance infrastructure.

When connected to Databricks Unity Catalog, the system performs semantic inheritance that includes table descriptions, column descriptions, and primary/foreign key relationships onto created datasets, according to AWS documentation.

Human Review Required

AWS emphasizes that the agentic workflow does not replace human judgment. Data curators must review all agent recommendations before accepting them to ensure data accuracy. This guardrail addresses a critical requirement for grounded Q&A systems: the underlying catalog must be trustworthy, or the AI-generated insights built on top of it will inherit those errors.

The review step positions the feature as an acceleration tool rather than full automation. Curators retain final authority over what metadata enters the catalog, while the agent handles the repetitive discovery and mapping work that traditionally consumes hours of manual effort.

Why It Matters

Grounded Q&A and trusted dashboards depend entirely on catalog quality. By reducing the manual overhead of catalog curation, AWS is lowering the barrier for enterprises to deploy reliable generative AI for business intelligence. Organizations that previously stalled on the "last mile" of data preparation can now move faster from raw data sources to AI-enabled analytics.

Amazon Quick serves as AWS's agentic AI assistant for work, while the catalog integration feature connects to QuickSight-compatible data catalogs. Community discussions about the feature remain hosted at community.amazonquicksight.com, indicating QuickSight branding persists for BI-specific capabilities even as Quick handles broader agentic workflows.

The preview status means the feature is available for testing but not yet generally available. AWS has not announced a specific timeline for general availability.
