BlackSky to Provide Optical Satellites for $1 Billion AI Space Project

BlackSky has been selected as the exclusive provider of very high-resolution electro-optical satellites for Altair-Next Gen, a $1 billion international AI infrastructure project. The initiative aims to build the world's largest AI-enabled satellite constellation to deliver real-time intelligence.
Announced on September 9, 2026, at the International Space Summit in Paris, the project is a strategic collaboration between France and the UAE. Led by Loft Orbital and Marlan Space—a subsidiary of IHC—the program will deploy an initial phase of 50 satellites. These spacecraft will be equipped with a suite of sensors, including radar and optical capabilities, with BlackSky specifically providing its Gen-3 satellites to ensure high-resolution imagery. According to BlackSky CEO Brian O’Toole, the company's proven on-orbit performance serves as an essential capability for the constellation.
The Shift to Orbital Edge Computing
The Altair-Next Gen infrastructure represents a fundamental shift in space operations by moving data processing from the ground to the edge. Rather than transmitting massive amounts of raw imagery to earth-based stations for analysis, the constellation is designed to analyze data directly in orbit. By deploying frontier AI models from consortium partner Mistral onboard the satellites, the system can identify specific events and transmit actionable alerts in seconds.
Production of the satellites is being handled by Orbitworks, a joint venture between Loft Orbital and Marlan Space, at a dedicated facility in Abu Dhabi. To get the hardware into orbit, the consortium has named MaiaSpace as its preferred launch partner.

By eliminating the need for raw data downloads and ground-side processing, the system enables near-constant coverage for time-sensitive applications.
