Caterpillar invests $100 million to pivot industrial workforce toward AI

Caterpillar is expanding its automation expertise from remote mining sites to more dynamic environments like quarries and construction zones. The company is integrating AI into manufacturing digital twins, field technician tools, and enterprise software to modernize its industrial footprint.
To support this transition, Caterpillar is investing $100 million over the next five years to train its workforce of approximately 118,000 employees in AI, autonomy, and robotics. This investment comes as the company manages a massive data ecosystem, consisting of roughly 1.6 million connected assets globally and more than 16 petabytes of structured data.
The Mining Blueprint
Caterpillar's current strategy is built on a foundation established in the mining sector. In that environment, hazardous conditions and chronic labor shortages made the adoption of autonomous drilling systems and haul trucks a necessity. By solving these challenges first, the company created a blueprint for integrating complex autonomous technology into physical, high-stakes workflows.

Infrastructure Windfalls
While Caterpillar deploys AI in the field, it is also reaping financial rewards from the broader AI boom. The company's Q2 revenue hit a record $20.5 billion, driven in part by the massive energy requirements of the tech sector. Power-generation sales for data centers spiked 72% to $3.10 billion during that period.
CEO Joe Creed stated that demand for generative AI infrastructure and cloud computing shows no signs of slowing down, positioning Caterpillar as a critical hardware provider for the very industry driving the AI revolution.
