Chandigarh University Hosts First University-Led National Space Technology Conclave

Chandigarh University hosted the first university-led National Space Technology Conclave (NSTC) 2026 on August 17-18. The event marks a strategic effort to bridge the gap between academic research and national space ambitions.

Organized by the university's Kalpana Chawla Centre for Research in Space Science and Technology (KCC) in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), the conclave served as a high-level forum for the sector's leadership. The gathering featured 30 distinguished scientists and technologists from ISRO, IIST, IN-SPACe, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), and the U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), alongside 10 CEOs and senior leaders from space industries and startups.

A primary outcome of the two-day event was the unveiling of the 'Chandigarh University Declaration on Space Technology for Viksit Bharat 2047.' This declaration outlines a framework to strengthen the role of universities in national space missions, ensuring that higher education institutions contribute directly to the technical and intellectual requirements of India's long-term space goals.

The Shift Toward Privatization

The conclave arrives during a period of significant structural change in India's aerospace sector. Following the government's 2020 decision to open the space sector to private entities and the subsequent Indian Space Policy 2023, the landscape has shifted from a state-led monopoly to a collaborative ecosystem. This policy pivot has catalyzed the emergence of over 450 space startups across the country, supported by government initiatives such as the Technology Adoption Fund and the Space Seed Fund.

Dr. YVN Krishnamurthy, Former Scientific Secretary at ISRO, noted that the core strength of the national program lies not only in the act of launching satellites but in the development of cost-effective solutions and the application of space technology for societal benefit.

Integrating Academia into the Ecosystem

The strategic importance of the NSTC lies in its focus on the talent pipeline. By integrating universities directly into the national space ecosystem, India aims to foster a sustainable pool of specialized researchers and engineers. This academic integration is viewed as essential for reducing reliance on external providers and transitioning from a domestic service model to a competitive player in the global satellite market.

According to Dr. Vinod Kumar, Director of the Promotion Directorate at IN-SPACe, while ISRO has established India as a space power, the nation has historically struggled with self-sufficiency in certain areas of demand.

Future Outlook

As India pursues the 'Viksit Bharat 2047' vision, the focus will likely shift toward how university-led research can accelerate the commercialization of space tech. Observers will be watching for the implementation of the Chandigarh University Declaration to see if it leads to formal partnerships between other academic institutions and agencies like IN-SPACe to further decentralize space research and development.
