Circeus Enters Israeli Market With Acquisition of Bootstrapped AI Startup Dondy

The London-based holding company absorbs a top-ranked Shopify WhatsApp automation platform to bolster its agentic commerce division.

British AI-native holding company Circeus has acquired Dondy, an Israeli conversational commerce startup, in a deal valued at several million dollars. The move marks the first time the London-based firm has expanded its operations into the Israeli tech ecosystem.

Dondy specializes in WhatsApp automation for Shopify merchants, transforming the messaging app from a basic support tool into a comprehensive commerce platform. Dondy currently serves more than 70,000 businesses across 140 countries and holds the number one ranking in the Shopify App Store for both the WhatsApp and WhatsApp Marketing categories. A key driver of the platform's efficiency is its AI integration; the company reports that its AI agents independently resolve approximately 70% of customer conversations without requiring human intervention.

The Lean Startup Model

Founded less than two years ago by childhood friends Or Shreiber, Tamir Or, and Inbal Katz, Dondy represents a departure from the traditional venture-backed startup trajectory. The company was entirely bootstrapped, reaching its current scale and subsequent acquisition without raising any external venture capital. The founders pivoted to the current model after a failed attempt to launch their own e-commerce business, which highlighted the systemic difficulties merchants face in converting and retaining customers.

Strategic Expansion for Circeus

For Circeus, formerly known as Shop Circle, the acquisition is part of a broader strategic pivot toward AI-native enterprise software. The holding company has been aggressive in its growth strategy, completing 18 acquisitions over the last four years to build a portfolio that now serves over 250,000 businesses. Dondy will be integrated into the company's agentic commerce software division, enhancing its ability to offer automated, high-conversion tools to its global client base.

Industry Implications

This acquisition underscores a growing trend of "lean" AI startups achieving high-value exits by focusing on specific, high-impact integrations—such as the intersection of WhatsApp and Shopify—rather than pursuing massive funding rounds. By prioritizing immediate utility and market fit over VC scaling, Dondy was able to dominate its niche and attract a major international buyer in under two years.

What's Next

As Circeus integrates Dondy's technology, the industry will be watching to see if this serves as a blueprint for further acquisitions within the Israeli AI sector. While the deal solidifies Circeus's footprint in agentic commerce, the company has yet to disclose whether it plans to establish a permanent regional headquarters in Israel or maintain Dondy as a remote satellite operation.
