Daedong Pivots to AI Farming Platforms with Level 4 Autonomous Tractor
The South Korean machinery giant is transitioning from hardware sales to a robotics ecosystem powered by three core AI pillars.
South Korean agricultural machinery leader Daedong is pivoting from its traditional role as a tractor manufacturer to become a provider of AI-powered farming platforms and robotics. This strategic shift aims to automate labor-intensive farming and optimize crop growth through a comprehensive "future-farming" ecosystem.
To drive this transformation, Daedong is developing three core AI pillars: Mobility AI for autonomous driving, Operation AI for automated farming tasks, and Cultivation AI for crop growth prediction and strategy. The company is leveraging a massive proprietary dataset to train these models, which includes approximately 3 million driving videos and 500,000 photos of fields and orchards. As a tangible result of these efforts, Daedong plans to release a Level 4 autonomous tractor in the first half of 2026.
The Infrastructure of Intelligent Farming
The transition is being spearheaded by the company's subsidiary, Daedong AI Lab, and the startup Daedong AgTech. To fuel its growth, Daedong AgTech recently secured approximately $11 million (KRW 15 billion) in funding from Smilegate Investment and the Korea Development Bank (KDB). This funding represents a pivotal step in the company's evolution into a technology leader.
Beyond funding, the company is expanding its software capabilities through a partnership with Naver Cloud to co-build agricultural agents based on sovereign AI. This integration of hardware and software is designed to produce immediate efficiency gains; specifically, Daedong's Operation AI models for tillage tasks are designed to improve fuel efficiency by 15% and reduce total work time by up to 30%.
Why the Shift Matters
Founded in 1947 and known in North America as Kioti, Daedong has long dominated mechanized equipment. However, the move toward "Physical AI"—where artificial intelligence controls machinery in complex, unpredictable outdoor environments—marks a departure from simple data analysis. By moving toward a platform-based revenue model, Daedong intends to reduce its historical reliance on one-time hardware sales and instead lead the global transition toward hyper-intelligent agriculture.
