Duke University Launches AI Suite to Secure Campus Generative AI Use

Duke University has expanded its artificial intelligence offerings to students, faculty, and staff through the launch of the "Duke AI Suite." The initiative provides a variety of secure, managed platforms designed to encourage the responsible integration of generative AI into academic and research workflows while offering a protected alternative to public chatbots.

At the center of the offering is DukeGPT, a campus-specific tool managed by the Duke Office of Information Technology (OIT). Launched in June as part of a provost's initiative, DukeGPT allows community members to ask university-specific questions and provides the ability to test and compare multiple AI models, including open-source options, against internal Duke knowledge sources.

Beyond DukeGPT, the university provides free access to Microsoft Copilot for students, faculty, and staff across both the university and the health system. While the free version of Copilot utilizes internet data, Duke also provides an educational license for ChatGPT (ChatGPT Edu) to handle general-purpose tasks. Unlike the university-integrated tools, ChatGPT Edu is not linked to internal Duke systems. For more specialized technical needs, the university offers "MyGPT Builder," which enables faculty and researchers to create custom AI environments, and the "AI Gateway," which provides developers and researchers with LiteLLM API keys to build AI-powered applications.

The Shift Toward Managed AI

As generative AI becomes ubiquitous in higher education, universities are increasingly moving away from a total reliance on third-party public tools. Duke's strategy involves creating a tiered ecosystem that differentiates between general-purpose use, university-integrated research, and professional software development. By establishing these distinct boundaries, the university can maintain strict data security protocols while still providing high-tier capabilities to its community.

Implications for Data Security

By providing managed AI tools, Duke reduces the risk of institutional data leaks that often occur when users input sensitive information into public AI models. This framework ensures that students and faculty have equitable, free access to advanced AI without compromising privacy. Furthermore, the suite establishes a standard for "responsible AI" by separating tools based on the sensitivity of the data being processed, such as prohibiting the use of protected health information (PHI) within these specific tools.

Future Outlook

The university continues to refine the boundaries between its general and integrated tools. As the AI Gateway and MyGPT Builder are adopted by more researchers, the university will likely see an increase in campus-built AI applications. The primary focus remains the balance between open academic exploration and the protection of institutional and personal data.
