Dyson has entered the smart oral care market with the launch of the CameraJet, an AI-powered electric toothbrush designed to automate interdental cleaning. The premium device aims to replace traditional flossing by using computer vision to identify and clean hard-to-reach areas of the mouth.

Retailing at $499, the CameraJet is equipped with a 100,000-pixel macro lens camera that live-streams footage of the user's mouth directly to the MyDyson app. According to Dyson, the technology allows users to "see what your dentist sees." The device employs a system called "Gap Optical Targeting," which uses AI to analyze 28 images per second. When the system detects a gap between teeth, it triggers a targeted burst of liquid mouth rinse to remove plaque within 100 milliseconds of detection.

A shift in oral care

This move marks a significant expansion for Dyson, moving beyond the standard electric toothbrush market. While most high-end brushes focus on tracking brushing duration or applying pressure sensors, the CameraJet attempts to merge sonic brushing with automated flossing. By integrating computer vision, the device provides a guided experience that identifies missed areas in real-time, shifting the responsibility of precision cleaning from the user to the hardware.

Privacy and over-engineering

The introduction of the CameraJet raises substantial questions regarding data privacy and the necessity of high-tech health monitoring. The collection and storage of internal oral imagery—essentially live-streaming health data from inside the human body—creates a new frontier for biometric data concerns. Furthermore, the $499 price point has sparked a debate over the "over-engineering" of household appliances, with critics questioning whether a macro camera and AI-driven liquid jets are essential for basic dental hygiene.
