Salone del Mobile Milano has announced that the 32nd edition of Euroluce, scheduled for April 13-18, 2027, will center on the intersection of artificial intelligence, lighting, and human longevity. The event aims to redefine lighting as an active service that adapts to individual health needs to extend the healthy portion of human life.
This strategic shift moves lighting away from its traditional role as a passive furnishing. Instead, the exhibition will explore "human-centred lighting" (HCL) designed to support well-being across homes, offices, and a rising category of "longevity residences." According to Salone del Mobile, AI will be the catalyst, enabling lighting systems to learn from a user's daily rituals and actions to construct personalized light curves.
The Gap in Healthy Aging
The focus on longevity is driven by a stark disparity between total lifespan and healthspan. In Italy, while life expectancy exceeds 83 years, the global average for healthy life expectancy (HALE) is approximately 62 to 63 years. This gap presents a critical design challenge for the industry: creating environments that do not "medicalize" the home but instead discreetly integrate health-supporting technology into the living space.
Industry players are already deploying technologies that mimic natural sunlight spectra to support circadian rhythms. Grau utilizes "Sunset Dimming" to simulate the evening sun and boost melatonin production, while Artemide’s "Dusk" (designed by BIG) captures the color ranges associated with different times of the day. Beyond the home, the Cariboni Group has introduced "Blue-Free" street lighting to protect ecosystems by minimizing blue light emissions.
The Rise of Longevity Infrastructure
This evolution reflects a broader trend in the real estate and wellness sectors. The Global Wellness Summit has identified "longevity residences," such as Velvaere and The Estate, as a key trend for 2026. These spaces treat the environment as an active ally in health maintenance rather than a mere container for living.
By leveraging AI to automate circadian adjustments, the design community intends to support concentration in offices and improve sleep quality in residential settings. The goal is to transform the built environment into a proactive tool for longevity, using light to regulate biological clocks and improve overall quality of life.
