Frequent AI Use Doubles Job Loss Fears, Gallup Study Finds

Increased familiarity with AI tools fails to ease worker anxiety, but strong managerial support significantly reduces displacement fears.

Frequent use of artificial intelligence is driving a surge in job insecurity, with the most active users feeling the most vulnerable. According to a Gallup study conducted between 2023 and early 2026, workers who use AI daily or multiple times a week are more than twice as likely to fear their jobs will be eliminated within five years compared to infrequent users.

Data from the study shows that as of the first quarter of 2026, approximately 19% of all workers believe their roles are somewhat or very likely to be eliminated by AI. The disparity in concern between power users and occasional users reached a peak in 2024, with a gap of 6.7 percentage points. Crucially, the research indicates that simply using the tools more often does not provide reassurance; instead, the anxiety is mitigated by the human element of management. Workers who feel their organization respects them or cares about their wellbeing are 6 to 7 percentage points less likely to report concerns about displacement.

The Limits of Upskilling

This research, drawn from four waves of nationally representative data from the Gallup Panel, challenges a common corporate assumption: that 'upskilling' or increasing tool proficiency naturally reduces the fear of automation. By integrating occupational exposure data—which measures the share of tasks a generative model can perform as well as a human—the study sought to determine if subjective fear aligned with objective risk. The findings suggest that familiarity with the technology does not act as a psychological shield against the threat of replacement.

Impact on Performance

The psychological toll of AI-induced anxiety has measurable consequences for organizational health. Gallup found that this fear correlates with a 0.20 standard deviation drop in employee engagement and a 0.18 standard deviation increase in burnout within the same individual over time. When workers perceive AI as a threat rather than a tool, the resulting instability leads to higher turnover intent and a decline in overall productivity.

The Managerial Mandate

These results suggest that without strong managerial support and transparent communication, the tools intended to drive efficiency may inadvertently undermine psychological safety. The data indicates that the primary lever for reducing AI-related stress is not technical training, but the quality of the relationship between the employee and their supervisor. For companies integrating AI, the focus may need to shift from purely technical onboarding to fostering a culture of care and respect to prevent a talent exodus.
