Google and Abbott Partner to Bring AI Glucose Coaching to General Wellness

The multi-year collaboration integrates Lingo CGM data with Gemini AI to provide personalized metabolic health guidance.

Google and Abbott have launched a multi-year partnership to integrate continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data into the Google Health app. The collaboration aims to shift metabolic health tracking from a clinical necessity for diabetics to a proactive wellness tool for the general population.

Under the agreement, data from Abbott’s Lingo CGM system will be fed into the Gemini-powered Google Health Coach. This AI-driven interface analyzes glucose levels alongside a user's nutrition, sleep, activity, and recovery metrics to deliver personalized wellness recommendations. Access to these AI coaching features requires a Google Health Premium subscription. The Lingo system is an over-the-counter device designed for adults 18 and older who do not use insulin; Abbott specifies that the system is not intended to diagnose diseases such as diabetes.

The Shift to Consumer Metabolic Health

This partnership follows a broader strategic expansion of Google’s Health Connect platform, which recently moved to allow the import of medical records and CGM data. Abbott’s Lingo system, which leverages FreeStyle Libre technology, entered the U.S. market without a prescription in 2024. By targeting the general wellness market rather than strictly medical patients, Abbott is positioning glucose monitoring as a daily habit for health optimization.

Why AI Coaching Matters

Integrating real-time biological data with a large language model (LLM) allows Google to attempt a closed-loop wellness ecosystem. Rather than providing raw data that users must interpret themselves, the Gemini-powered coach provides actionable guidance based on how a user's physiology responds to specific daily habits. Olivier Ropars, divisional vice president of Abbott's Lingo business, noted that the primary challenge in healthcare is not treating disease, but helping people stay healthier for longer periods.

Future Research and Validation

To refine the AI's coaching capabilities and develop future Lingo features, Google and Abbott plan to conduct one of the largest real-world metabolic health studies to date. This research will utilize a combination of glucose data, wearable metrics, laboratory results, and user surveys to validate the effectiveness of the AI's recommendations. Observers will be watching to see if this data-driven approach can meaningfully alter consumer behavior and improve long-term metabolic outcomes for non-diabetic users.
