Google and UK Government Launch First State-Backed Contrail Avoidance Trial
Operation Blue Skies will use AI to reroute thousands of flights over the North Atlantic to curb aviation's climate impact.
Google UK and the UK government have launched Operation Blue Skies, the first state-backed trial designed to reduce aviation's climate impact by routing aircraft around warming contrails across an entire oceanic airspace. The initiative marks a significant shift from individual airline tests to a coordinated, airspace-wide operational strategy.
Operating within the Shanwick oceanic airspace in the eastern North Atlantic, the 30-month program will utilize AI-powered forecasts to help air traffic controllers nudge flights into different altitudes to avoid contrail-sensitive regions. The trial involves approximately 10,000 flights per year, requiring small altitude adjustments of up to 2,000 feet. Two primary operational trials are scheduled for the winters of 2026-27 and 2027-28. The project is a £5 million effort, with the UK Department for Transport providing £2.65 million via the ATI Programme and Google contributing £1.4 million in-kind pro bono.
The Science of Contrails
Contrails form when water vapor from jet exhaust freezes around soot particles in cold, moist atmospheric conditions. While some dissipate quickly, persistent contrails can spread into cirrus clouds that trap heat in the atmosphere. These contrails are estimated to account for roughly one-third of aviation's total climate impact. The Shanwick airspace alone is responsible for approximately 5% of global contrail warming, making it a critical testing ground for mitigation efforts.
A Scalable Climate Solution
This operation scales previous theoretical research from Imperial College London, which suggested in 2020 that adjusting the altitude of fewer than 2% of flights could reduce contrail-related warming by 59%. "In 2020, our study found that small changes to flight paths could reduce the climate impact of contrails," said Professor Marc Stettler of Imperial College London. "Operation Blue Skies is a chance to test that idea in the real world and on a scale we've never seen before."
Contrail avoidance is viewed as one of the most cost-effective levers for reducing aviation's footprint because it requires no new aircraft technology or expensive alternative fuels. If the trial proves successful, it could provide a validated blueprint for global airspace management to drastically cut warming emissions through simple operational changes.
Next Steps for Aviation
As the program moves toward its 2026 operational window, the focus will be on gathering empirical evidence. Dr. Sebastian Eastham, Associate Professor in Sustainable Aviation at Imperial College London, noted that the project is an opportunity to advance capability in aviation sustainability, stating that the industry needs "empirical proof that the tools we have available to us are up to the challenge."
