Google is investing €13 billion (approximately $15.1 billion) in Finland to expand its digital infrastructure and clean energy capabilities. The move represents the company's largest single investment in Europe to date, designed to meet the surging compute demands of Google Search, Maps, and the Gemini AI model.

The project is expected to deliver a substantial economic boost to the region. Projections suggest the investment will contribute €3.6 billion annually to Finland's GDP during the initial construction phase. Furthermore, the initiative is expected to support more than 37,000 jobs nationwide throughout the construction period spanning 2027 and 2028.

Google has operated in Finland for 15 years, beginning with the conversion of a former paper mill in Hamina into a data center. While this new expansion leverages that existing digital ecosystem, it must address the massive power requirements inherent in modern AI workloads.

To ensure grid stability and sustainability, Google is signing a 22-year agreement to support the life extension of the Loviisa nuclear power plant. This long-term energy strategy is supplemented by the addition of new onshore wind capacity and the installation of a 94-megawatt battery system, creating a diversified power portfolio to sustain hyperscale operations.
