Google launches AI-first Google Pics to automate creative design in Workspace

The new tool leverages the Nano Banana model to replace manual design with prompt-based creation for business and premium users.

Google has launched Google Pics, an AI-first creative design tool integrated directly into Google Workspace. The move signals a strategic shift toward automating the visual creation process through generative AI rather than traditional manual editing.

Powered by the Nano Banana image generation model, Google Pics allows users to create and modify visuals using prompts. The tool is currently rolling out to Google Workspace business customers as well as subscribers of Google AI Pro and Ultra. Integration is beginning with Google Docs and Google Slides, while support for Google Drive is expected to follow. Key technical capabilities include object isolation and transformation, as well as the ability to modify or translate text embedded within images.

The shift from templates to prompts

For years, the creative software market has been defined by a divide between professional-grade tools and template-based platforms. Companies like Canva have built massive ecosystems around human-created templates and royalty-based assets, while Adobe Express provides a suite of high-end design controls. Google is attempting to disrupt this model by removing the need for templates entirely. Instead of browsing a library of pre-made layouts, users describe what they want, and the AI generates the design from scratch.

Lowering the design barrier

This pivot represents a broader effort by Google to move beyond providing the infrastructure for productivity—such as the blank pages of Docs or Slides—and instead provide the actual creative content. By replacing manual design with prompting, Google is targeting the "everyday design" market. This segment consists of professional users who require high-quality visuals for corporate presentations or social media but lack formal graphic design training or the time to master complex software.

Integration and outlook

As Google Pics becomes more deeply embedded in the Workspace ecosystem, the focus will likely shift toward how these AI-generated assets interact across different document types. While the core features of object transformation and text modification are now confirmed, the full extent of the tool's collaborative editing capabilities remains a key area for users to monitor. The industry will be watching to see if prompt-based creation can truly replace the precision of manual design tools in a corporate environment.
