Howard University will launch its first AI certificate program in the fall of 2026, marking a major expansion of the institution's efforts to integrate artificial intelligence into its academic core. As part of the curriculum, faculty have identified three foundational courses: an introduction to AI tools and techniques, a course on ethical and responsible AI, and a study of AI within specific disciplines. To ensure the program remains accessible, Dr. Kenneth Anderson, associate provost for undergraduate studies, stated that the university intends for these courses to count toward degrees or practicums to avoid creating additional barriers for students.
A Broader Strategic Initiative
The certificate is a primary pillar of a larger AI Initiative launched in 2024 and overseen by an AI Advisory Council. This broader strategy includes the development of an official university AI policy and the expansion of corporate partnerships with tech giants including Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI.
Financial and research support for these efforts is significant. Howard has received a $2.25 million grant from OpenAI to support AI research and development. Additionally, the university has joined OpenAI's NextGenAI consortium, a group of 15 partnering institutions dedicated to advancing the technology.
