IMTS 2026 to Target 'Pilot Gap' With Focus on Industrial AI and Autonomous Factories

Cloud giants and industrial leaders will gather in Chicago to showcase the transition from AI experimentation to full-scale operational deployment.

The International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) 2026 will center on the aggressive scaling of industrial artificial intelligence when it opens September 14-19 in Chicago. The event aims to help manufacturers move beyond isolated AI pilots toward broad, operational deployment across the factory floor.

To facilitate this transition, the show will introduce a dedicated Industrial AI Arena and an Industrial AI Conference. These venues will showcase AI-enabled production technologies and feature Main Stage presentations from global technology leaders including AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft, and Siemens. The programming focuses on the shift from basic automation to "agentic" and "physical" AI systems that can perceive and act within the physical world.

The Push for Scale

AWS will lead discussions on scaling these technologies in a session titled "Realizing Industrial AI at Scale with AWS." Mike Choe, general manager of U.S. Automotive & Manufacturing at AWS, will provide insights alongside Brandon Hootman of Caterpillar and Rajesh Singh of Amazon Robotics. Choe noted that industrial AI is driving the most significant transformation in manufacturing since the introduction of robotics.

Google Cloud will address the evolution toward "Industry 5.0" through a presentation by Praveen Rao titled "The Agentic Factory: Where Human Ingenuity Meets Industrial AI." Rao's session will highlight implementations by Ford, ASML, Honeywell, GE Appliances, and Toyota. According to Rao, the future of the industry focuses on empowering workforce talent alongside intelligent machinery as factories move toward autonomy.

Physical AI and Shop Floor Integration

Microsoft is focusing on the intersection of data and physical action. Dayan Rodriguez will present "Physical AI in Manufacturing: From Insight to Action," while Ben Grimes will lead "Industrial Intelligence Unlocked: The Next Frontier of Manufacturing." These sessions will highlight successful deployments at Rolls-Royce, TK Elevator, and Krones.

On the hardware side, Siemens and AMT will collaborate on a session titled "AI on the Shop Floor: Beyond Geometry." Led by Volker Wolff of Siemens, the discussion will focus on integrating AI directly into CNC controls. The goal is to stabilize machining accuracy and significantly reduce the time required for programming and setup.

Industry Implications

This convergence of cloud infrastructure and industrial hardware signals a pivotal shift in the manufacturing sector. By moving toward physical AI, companies can transition from using AI for simple data insights to utilizing systems that take direct operational action. This shift is expected to accelerate innovation cycles and reduce long-term operational costs.

As the industry moves toward the 2026 show, the primary metric for success will be the ability of manufacturers to bridge the "pilot gap."
