Medtech Adopts Human-AI Hybrid Model to Speed Device Design
Companies like HiArc are using generative AI to automate regulatory documentation and complex engineering tasks while keeping humans in the loop for critical decisions.
Medical device companies are integrating generative AI into their engineering workflows to move beyond basic productivity gains and fundamentally reshape how devices are developed. This transition marks a shift toward a human-AI hybrid model where artificial intelligence serves as a support system rather than an autonomous decision-maker.
At HiArc, AI is being deployed to automate the "busy work" of engineering, specifically the creation of test plans and documentation. One primary application is the implementation of "continuous compliance," where AI generates draft documentation in real-time as software is built. This approach reduces the traditional gap between functional engineering progress and the regulatory records required for approval.
Overcoming Tooling Barriers
Beyond documentation, engineers are using AI to bypass the limitations of expensive, proprietary software. At HiArc, teams used AI to build custom rendering agents for SysML 2.0 diagrams to avoid the high costs of existing commercial tools.
The efficiency gains extend to complex simulation. A pilot project for a generalized timing simulator was completed in half the time required by manual methods. Following this success, the initiative is being expanded to include the creation of chemical flow diagrams.
The Compliance Burden
Medical device design is one of the most heavily regulated industries in the world, requiring exhaustive peer reviews, QA validation, and strict documentation. Historically, this "red tape" has created a significant lag, where the official records of a device's design often trail behind the actual engineering breakthroughs. By automating the drafting process, companies can maintain the necessary rigor of compliance without sacrificing the speed of innovation.
A Shift in Engineering Skills
As AI tools become commoditized, the competitive advantage in medtech is shifting away from the software itself and toward the expertise of the engineers using it. The industry is seeing a transition where execution is handled by AI, while humans focus on critical thinking and skeptical validation.

While the efficiency gains in simulation and diagramming are clear, the primary challenge remains maintaining human accountability and judgment in a field where device failure can have life-threatening consequences.
