Miami University to Embed AI Competencies Across All Academic Departments
The 'AI in the Majors' initiative will ensure every undergraduate graduates with field-specific AI literacy by 2028.
Miami University is launching a faculty-led initiative to integrate artificial intelligence competencies into the curriculum of every academic department. The program, titled "AI in the Majors," aims to ensure all undergraduate students graduate with AI literacy tailored to their specific professional disciplines.
The rollout will proceed in three distinct cohorts. Starting in the 2026-2027 academic year, 13 volunteer departments serving approximately 4,925 students will begin integration. The second phase in 2027 will expand to 15 departments and 10,949 students, concluding with a final group of 21 departments and 18,982 students by the 2027-2028 academic year. University officials identify the initiative as a key component of the MiamiTHRIVE strategic plan.
A Systemic Approach to Literacy
This move follows a series of broader AI investments by the university. Miami has already established a dedicated bachelor's degree in Artificial Intelligence and launched a free five-module "AI Fundamentals" microlearning course available to students, faculty, and staff. By moving beyond standalone courses, the university is shifting toward a model where AI is treated as a core professional competency rather than an isolated subject.
Ellen Yezierski, director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, emphasized the necessity of this integration, stating that because AI is so deeply embedded in the world, it must be similarly embedded in coursework and learning.
Industry Implications
Integrating AI across diverse fields—ranging from Accountancy and Anthropology to Art and Speech Pathology—signals a shift in how higher education views generative technology. Rather than treating AI primarily as a tool for academic dishonesty, the university is positioning it as a requirement for professional readiness.
Donna Scarborough, professor and chair of the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, noted that the goal is to foster awareness, agency, application, and accountability, particularly regarding the ethical implications of the technology's use in professional settings.
Future Outlook
As the rollout progresses through 2028, the university will monitor how these competencies are applied across different disciplines. The success of the program will depend on the ability of faculty across nearly 50 departments to synthesize AI tools into existing pedagogical frameworks while maintaining academic rigor and ethical standards. This systemic shift reflects a broader institutional commitment to ensuring that graduates are not merely users of technology, but critical practitioners capable of navigating the evolving intersection of AI and their respective professional fields.
