Northwestern’s Ryan Institute Launches ‘Life, Automated’ Podcast to Decode AI Impact

The Ryan Institute on Complexity at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management has launched a new podcast, ‘Life, Automated,’ to examine the societal and economic shifts driven by artificial intelligence. Hosted by Senior Director Jess Love and distributed by NPR member station KQED, the series aims to make the complexities of automation accessible to a general audience.

The podcast features interdisciplinary conversations with practitioners, artists, and researchers, focusing on the personal and systemic impacts of AI. Produced by the Ryan Institute—which was established with support from the Ryan Family Foundation—the series serves as a public-facing extension of the institute's research into how big data and AI solve complex business and societal challenges.

The Human Bottleneck

A central theme of the series is the evolving nature of labor in an automated world. Benjamin Jones, an economist at Kellogg and a contributor to the series, argues that while automation drives productivity, it simultaneously creates operational bottlenecks that only humans can resolve.
