Novo Nordisk Taps AWS as Preferred Cloud Partner to Speed AI Drug Discovery
The pharmaceutical giant is embedding AWS engineers into R&D teams via a new London hub to shorten therapy development timelines.
Novo Nordisk and Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a strategic partnership on August 10, 2026, to integrate agentic AI and cloud infrastructure across the company's operations. The deal establishes AWS as Novo Nordisk's preferred cloud provider and strategic AI partner, aiming to modernize drug discovery and operational efficiency.
As part of the agreement, the two companies opened a co-innovation hub in London. This facility allows AWS engineers and AI specialists to work directly alongside Novo Nordisk’s research and development teams, a move designed to shorten the timeline from identifying a drug target to administering the first human dose. The technical framework of the partnership relies on a suite of specialized tools, including Amazon Bio Discovery, Amazon Bedrock, and Bedrock AgentCore.
A Broader AI Strategy
This collaboration is the latest step in a rapid AI expansion for Novo Nordisk. The company previously announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI in April 2026, signaling a comprehensive effort to embed artificial intelligence into every facet of its business. By integrating these technologies into drug discovery, manufacturing, supply chain, and commercial operations, Novo Nordisk is attempting to keep pace with the accelerating timelines of AI-driven drug development.
Early results from the collaboration indicate significant internal adoption. More than 25,000 Novo Nordisk employees have already adopted AI tools, and the company reports that the partnership has already succeeded in reducing the time required for clinical documentation.
Industry Implications
The partnership represents a shift toward "forward deployed" engineering within the pharmaceutical industry. Rather than treating cloud services as a passive utility, Novo Nordisk is embedding cloud specialists directly within its research teams to scale the processing of complex genomic and clinical data.
"Partnering with AWS is about making AI a driver of innovation across Novo Nordisk," said Mike Doustdar, President and CEO of Novo Nordisk. AWS CEO Matt Garman emphasized the patient-centric goal of the venture, stating that the work is focused on "getting the right medicine to patients, faster."
Future Integration
Beyond the laboratory, the partnership extends into the commercial and delivery ecosystem. Novo Nordisk will continue to collaborate with Amazon Pharmacy, Amazon Ads, and Amazon One Medical to evolve how therapies are marketed and delivered to patients.
Industry observers will now watch how the London co-innovation hub impacts the actual speed of the pipeline. While the reduction in documentation time provides a proof of concept for operational efficiency, the primary metric for success will be whether the integration of Bedrock and Bio Discovery leads to a measurable increase in the rate of successful new therapy candidates.
