OpenAI and Jony Ive Partner on Screenless AI Home Companion for 2027

The AI research giant has acquired Jony Ive's startup 'io' to develop a dedicated hardware endpoint for its models.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · August 6, 2026

OpenAI is partnering with legendary former Apple designer Jony Ive and his firm LoveFrom to create a dedicated consumer AI device. The collaboration aims to move OpenAI's intelligence beyond smartphone applications and into a physical, ambient home environment.

The first product in this venture is reported to be a screenless smart speaker equipped with a camera system and various sensors. Designed to function as a humanlike AI companion for the home, development is being led by LoveFrom and a team of former Apple designers and engineers, including Scott Cannon, Evans Hankey, and Tang Tan. To solidify this hardware push, OpenAI acquired Ive's AI device startup, known as 'io,' for an estimated $6.4 billion to $6.5 billion.

The Shift to Ambient Hardware

For over a year, OpenAI and Jony Ive have been working toward a "computer built for AI," seeking a form factor that allows users to interact with artificial intelligence without the mediation of a traditional screen. This effort arrives as the industry struggles to find a winning hardware blueprint; previous attempts like the Humane AI Pin and Rabbit r1 failed to gain mainstream traction due to limited utility and technical hurdles. By focusing on a home-based speaker, OpenAI is pivoting toward a more stable, ambient utility model.

Industry Implications

This venture marks OpenAI's first major entry into consumer hardware. By leveraging Ive's design pedigree, the company is attempting to establish a defining physical interface for AI that avoids the pitfalls of earlier gadgets. If successful, the device could shift the primary AI interface from handheld screens to voice-driven home companions. This puts OpenAI in direct competition with the established smart speaker dominance of Amazon and Google, potentially redefining how users integrate AI into their daily domestic routines.

Timeline and Availability

While the project is currently in development, the device is expected to launch in 2027. Current estimates place the price point between $200 and $300. While the core partnership and the acquisition of 'io' are confirmed, specific design details regarding the device's physical shape and exact sensor capabilities remain under wraps as the team works toward the 2027 release window.
