OpenAI and Samsung Advance Research on Next-Gen AI Chips
The AI leader is exploring hardware partnerships with Samsung to secure its computational pipeline and reduce reliance on single-source foundries.
OpenAI is deepening its collaboration with Samsung Electronics to research and produce next-generation AI processors. The move signals a strategic push by the company to secure its own hardware pipeline as it scales its computational needs to support increasingly complex models.
Harrison Kim, General Manager of OpenAI Korea, identified joint production and research on next-generation chips as one of the areas where the company has made the most progress and gained the most recognition with Samsung. This development follows the introduction of OpenAI's first custom AI inference chip, known as "Jalapeño," which was co-designed with Broadcom and manufactured by TSMC.
While Kim highlighted the progress with Samsung, an OpenAI spokesperson later provided a more cautious framing of the relationship. The spokesperson stated that references to expanding the collaboration were made within the context of an existing relationship and clarified that the company did not explicitly announce plans to manufacture chips through Samsung.
The Infrastructure Push
This exploration of chip manufacturing is part of a broader, aggressive effort by OpenAI to build its own AI infrastructure and reduce its dependence on third-party hardware providers. To facilitate this transition toward custom silicon, the company is currently deepening its ties with Broadcom for chip design services.
Beyond logic chips, OpenAI is already securing the memory components necessary for its massive scale. Samsung and SK Hynix have both signed letters of intent to supply memory chips for "Stargate," OpenAI's ambitious data center project. By controlling both the design and the sourcing of its hardware, OpenAI aims to optimize its models for specific hardware architectures rather than relying solely on general-purpose GPUs.
Industry Implications
If OpenAI successfully diversifies its manufacturing partners, it would represent a significant shift in the AI supply chain. Currently, the industry is heavily reliant on TSMC, which faces immense capacity constraints due to the overwhelming demand from giants like Nvidia and AMD.
By engaging Samsung in the production of next-generation processors, OpenAI could potentially mitigate the risk of supply bottlenecks.
