OpenAI Launches High-Capacity Premium Seats for ChatGPT Business

New tiered pricing targets corporate power users with five times the usage capacity of standard accounts.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · August 11, 2026

OpenAI introduced "Premium" seats for ChatGPT Business customers on August 10, 2026, to accommodate high-activity professional users. The move establishes a high-tier access level designed to remove usage bottlenecks for organizations relying on AI for intensive workloads.

These Premium seats provide five times the usage capacity of Standard seats and completely eliminate the five-hour usage limit. Pricing for the new tier is set at $125 per user per month for monthly billing, or $100 per user per month for annual commitments. In contrast, Standard seats remain priced at $25 per month for monthly billing and $20 per month for annual plans. To encourage adoption, OpenAI is offering $100 in credits for each of the first five qualifying Premium seats for eligible workspaces.

The Push for Enterprise Dominance

This strategic shift comes as OpenAI faces intensifying competition in the enterprise sector, most notably from Anthropic’s Claude. While ChatGPT initially scaled through massive consumer adoption, rivals have gained traction among business users who prioritize precision and complex research. By introducing a specific tier for "power users," OpenAI is attempting to deepen its footprint in professional environments where standard limits may hinder productivity.

Monetizing Power Users

According to OpenAI, the Premium tier "gives your most active teammates the capacity to take on bigger projects and keep work moving." This tiered model allows the company to monetize heavy AI usage more effectively while providing the necessary compute capacity for high-stakes corporate tasks, such as large-scale code improvements and the development of comprehensive operating plans. It signals a transition from a one-size-fits-all business model to a segmented approach that mirrors the high-demand needs of professional services.

Market Implications

The introduction of Premium seats reflects a broader industry trend toward tiered enterprise access to combat rivals entering the market through specialized, high-stakes use cases. By isolating high-capacity needs into a premium bracket, OpenAI can maintain stability for standard users while capturing higher revenue from the most intensive corporate accounts. Observers will now be watching to see if this pricing structure accelerates adoption among large-scale enterprises or pushes cost-sensitive power users toward competing platforms.
