Palo Alto Startup Abliteration Launches AI Model Designed to Never Refuse Prompts

Using a process called 'orthogonalization,' the company strips away safety filters to eliminate the 'over-refusal' common in mainstream AI.

A Palo Alto-based startup is challenging the industry's trend toward restrictive safety guardrails by developing AI models designed specifically to avoid refusing user prompts. The company, known as Abliteration, aims to provide a tool that "doesn't say no," targeting a growing segment of developers who find mainstream AI filters overly restrictive.

To achieve this, Abliteration recently released "abliterated-model-large-v2," a model based on the GLM-5.3 open-weight architecture from Z.ai. The startup utilized a technical process called "orthogonalization" to identify and remove the specific refusal mechanisms embedded in the model. According to the company, this method allows the AI to bypass standard safety refusals while preserving its core reasoning and coding capabilities.

The Problem of Over-Refusal

This project arrives as the broader AI industry leans heavily into alignment and Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). While these techniques are intended to prevent the generation of dangerous or biased content, they frequently result in "over-refusal." This occurs when a model declines to answer benign or helpful requests because they trigger a broad or overly sensitive safety filter. Abliteration specifically targets developers frustrated by these constraints in mainstream systems, such as Anthropic's Fable 5.

The Tension Over AI Safety

The emergence of Abliteration highlights a deepening divide between AI safety advocates and proponents of "uncensored" or "open" AI. While major labs argue that strict guardrails are essential to prevent the misuse of powerful models, a market demand has grown for systems free from corporate-imposed moral or safety constraints. This tension reflects a fundamental disagreement over whether the responsibility for safe AI usage should lie with the model's creator or the end user.

Ethical Boundaries and Next Steps

Despite its mission to eliminate refusals, Abliteration has not abandoned all constraints. The company stated that its models will still maintain specific ethical boundaries, explicitly refusing to generate content that describes self-harm or child sexual abuse material. As the company continues to refine its orthogonalization process, the industry will be watching to see if this "uncensored" approach gains mainstream traction among developers or if it prompts further regulatory scrutiny regarding the deployment of models without standard safety filters.
