Physical AI Enters Manufacturing Mainstream as Investment Holds Steady

A new TCS report reveals that while most manufacturers are still experimenting with Physical AI, spending is increasing to transform warehouses and assembly lines.

Physical AI is transitioning from theoretical research to the factory floor as manufacturers integrate intelligence directly into sensors and physical processes. According to the 'Future-Ready Manufacturing: TCS Physical AI Readiness Report 2026,' the industry is shifting toward a 'human plus AI' operating model designed to boost productivity and safety without replacing the workforce entirely.

Despite this momentum, the transition remains in its early stages. The report finds that 68% of manufacturers are currently in non-deployment or experimental phases of Physical AI adoption. However, financial commitment to the technology remains robust: 26% of surveyed companies plan to increase their spending on Physical AI, and notably, no surveyed organization intends to reduce its investment in the sector.

High-Impact Zones

The appetite for scaling these technologies is driven by the potential for transformational gains in specific operational areas. The TCS survey indicates that 77% of respondents expect a significant or transformational impact on warehouse operations. This is closely followed by assembly and manufacturing at 75%, and logistics at 72%.

This trend reflects a broader industry move toward "Physical AI," which differs from traditional generative AI by interacting with the tangible world. By embedding AI into the physical layer of production, companies aim to create more responsive, autonomous systems that can adapt to real-time environmental changes on the shop floor, reducing downtime and increasing precision.

Scaling the Transition

To bridge the gap between experimentation and full-scale deployment, infrastructure and partnerships are becoming critical. Tata Consultancy Services has already launched the Physical AI Gemini Experience Center in Troy, Michigan. Developed in partnership with Google Cloud, the center is designed to help manufacturers identify and scale specific use cases, moving them from the lab to the production line through hands-on validation.

The Road Ahead

As the technology scales, the industry must now address the governance gaps that accompany rapid adoption. While the investment trend is positive, the shift toward autonomous physical systems introduces new complexities in accountability and regulatory compliance that manufacturers must resolve to reach full maturity.

Industry observers will be watching whether the 26% of companies increasing spend can successfully move the 68% of experimental users into active deployment over the next few years, potentially triggering a wider industrial shift toward autonomous operations.
