Reliance Jio opens JioPC cloud service to all Indian internet users
The company is pivoting to a computing-as-a-service model to turn aging hardware into AI-ready machines.
Reliance Jio has expanded its JioPC cloud service to all internet users across India, removing the previous requirement that customers be Jio broadband subscribers. The move allows users to stream a high-performance virtual PC to their existing hardware, effectively bypassing the need for expensive physical upgrades.
The service is designed to breathe new life into aging computers, with Reliance Jio claiming the system can support hardware as old as eight years. Depending on the plan, users can access up to 8 virtual CPUs, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. Entry-level pricing starts at ₹1,000 (approximately $11) for a two-month subscription. For those seeking longer-term access, annual plans are available at ₹4,000 (~$42) for 8GB RAM and 500GB storage, or ₹5,000 (~$53) for 16GB RAM and 1TB storage.
The shift to cloud computing
This expansion comes as India's PC market continues to grow. According to IDC estimates, the country's installed base of PCs exceeded 65 million in 2025 and is projected to reach 69 million by the end of 2026. By shifting the heavy lifting of processing and storage to centralized data centers, Jio is targeting price-sensitive demographics, including students and low-income households, who may be unable to afford the latest AI-capable hardware.
Prabhu Ram, VP of industry research at CyberMedia Research, noted that by opening JioPC to non-Jio users, the company is broadening its value proposition while simultaneously challenging the traditional hardware upgrade cycle.
Industry implications
The strategy represents a fundamental shift from a hardware-ownership model to "computing-as-a-service." In a market that has traditionally favored owning physical devices, Jio is betting that users will trade a one-time purchase for a recurring subscription to maintain high-performance capabilities.
While this model democratizes access to advanced computing power, its scalability depends on two critical factors: the stability of India's internet infrastructure and the willingness of consumers to adopt a subscription-based utility for their primary computing needs.
