The product arrives as enterprises struggle to balance the productivity gains of generative AI with the volatile costs of large-scale token consumption.
The development of the console was prompted by Rippling's own financial crisis with AI. The company discovered its AI spending was on track to consume 40% of its R&D headcount budget. Internal analysis revealed a massive disparity in usage: just 10% to 15% of employees were responsible for 60% of the total spend, including one engineer who cost the company $50,000 per month in AI fees.
The Shift from Tokenmaxxing
This internal volatility reflects a broader trend where many enterprises adopted a "tokenmaxxing" approach. Companies provided broad, unrestricted AI access without strict cost controls, leading to runaway expenses as employees defaulted to the most expensive frontier models for simple, low-complexity tasks.
To combat this, Rippling's AI Spend Console introduces an AI gateway that routes prompts to the most cost-effective models based on the task. By implementing this routing strategy, Rippling reduced its token spend from 40% to 15% of its headcount budget while maintaining a usage volume of approximately 600 billion tokens per month. The tool integrates with major vendors, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Cursor.
Measuring AI ROI
Beyond simple cost tracking, the console includes dashboards that correlate AI spend with concrete productivity metrics, such as the number of pull requests generated. This marks a transition toward a rigorous ROI framework for AI deployment.
"The truth is that the inference providers, like Anthropic and OpenAI, have absolutely no incentives to help you control your spend," said Matt MacInnis, Rippling's Chief Product Officer.
The End of the Blank Check
As AI becomes a standard workplace utility, the era of the "blank check" for token usage is ending. The shift toward AI gateways suggests that access may soon be tied to measurable productivity gains—such as faster customer onboarding or increased code output—rather than being treated as a universal utility like email. This could potentially limit AI access for employees who cannot demonstrate a clear productivity increase relative to their cost.
