Spelman College has appointed Dr. Ayanna Howard, a distinguished roboticist and artificial intelligence expert, as its 12th president. Dr. Howard officially assumes the leadership role on August 1, 2026, succeeding interim president Rosalind Brewer.
Dr. Howard brings a deep technical and academic pedigree to the institution, having previously served as the dean of the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University. Her professional background includes tenure as a NASA engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, establishing her as a leading figure in robotics and AI. Spelman College, a private liberal arts institution for women of African descent, has maintained its position as the No. 1 HBCU by U.S. News & World Report for 19 consecutive years. The college is already a primary producer of Black women earning doctoral degrees in STEM fields.
