A 13-year-old student from Shanghai has earned approximately US$2,600 by developing and selling an AI-powered study application despite having no prior programming experience. The achievement underscores a shifting landscape where generative AI allows non-technical users to move from concept to commercial product in days.

Zhu Shuhan, a Grade Two junior secondary school student, generated 18,000 yuan in income over a three-day period. Her success came during a national AI product marketing competition held in Hangzhou from August 21 to 23. Unlike traditional hackathons that reward technical architecture or elegant code, this event judged participants based on the commercial viability and market traction of their applications. Based on the app's sales performance during the event, Zhu secured third prize among more than 50 participants.

The Rise of No-Code Development

This development is part of a broader trend in the democratization of software creation. The emergence of "no-code" and "low-code" tools, powered by large language models, has effectively lowered the barrier to entry for software development. Previously, building a functional application required years of study in computer science and mastery of specific programming languages. Now, individuals can describe their desired functionality in plain language, allowing AI to generate the necessary logic and structure.

In Zhu's case, the ability to bypass the traditional learning curve of coding allowed her to focus entirely on the product's utility and its marketability. Beyond the technical feat, the rapid monetization of the app reflects a significant demand for AI-driven educational and parental supervision tools within the Chinese market. The pressure for academic performance in China has created a robust economy for tools that can automate study supervision and improve student concentration. By targeting this specific pain point, Zhu was able to achieve immediate financial validation for her product.
