South Korea's Kospi Returns to Bull Market as AI Trade Revives

The benchmark index recovered from a historic July plunge, driven by a rebound in semiconductor giants Samsung and SK Hynix.

South Korea's benchmark Kospi index entered a technical bull market on August 13, 2026, marking a rapid recovery from a period of extreme volatility. The surge was fueled by a global revival in the AI trade, signaling a return of investor confidence in the region's tech sector.

The rebound is primarily led by semiconductor giants Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. This recovery follows a brutal correction in July 2026, during which the Kospi plunged 22%, representing one of the steepest monthly declines on record. This crash occurred after a massive rally in the first half of the year, creating a sharp boom-and-bust cycle for investors.

The Speculative Flush

The market's volatility was amplified by heavy retail leverage and the proliferation of leveraged ETFs, which created what some observers described as a "casino-like" environment. The July correction served as a significant clearing event for this speculative positioning. Assets in Korean leveraged ETFs plummeted approximately 54%, falling from a June peak of $53 billion to $25 billion. Similarly, retail margin-loan balances dropped from $25 billion to $19 billion as the market flushed out over-leveraged traders.

Global AI Implications

Because Samsung and SK Hynix together account for approximately half of the Kospi, the index serves as a critical barometer for global AI hardware spending. South Korea controls a vast portion of the High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) supply, meaning swings in the Kospi often ripple through chip stocks across Asia and Wall Street.

A sustained bull market in Seoul suggests a broader confidence in a long-term AI hardware cycle. Goldman Sachs analysts noted that their central case is that the memory cycle is likely to be stronger and last longer than previous ones, suggesting that current market pricing may not yet fully reflect this prospect.

Looking Ahead

Investors are now watching to see if this recovery can maintain momentum or if the market remains susceptible to the same volatility seen in the first half of the year. While the clearing of speculative leverage provides a more stable foundation, the Kospi remains tightly tethered to the global appetite for AI infrastructure. The key indicator for the coming months will be whether the demand for HBM chips continues to outpace supply, potentially extending the current hardware cycle through 2030.
