The US startup Reflect Orbital is preparing to launch Eärendil-1, a test satellite designed to beam sunlight to Earth during the night. The project has ignited a fierce debate over the preservation of the night sky and the limits of current space regulation.
Eärendil-1 features an 18-by-18-meter mirror, serving as a precursor to a planned constellation of up to 50,000 satellites with mirrors measuring 54-by-54 meters. According to a study by Miroslav Kocifaj, a single satellite could appear 40 times brighter than the full moon within its 5-kilometer target area. While the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved the test launch, the project faces significant backlash from the scientific community and environmental groups like DarkSky International.

Reflect Orbital intends to provide on-demand sunlight for military applications, emergency response, and solar charging.
