Synchrony Pivots to 'Agentic Commerce' via OpenAI Partnership
The financial giant is integrating with OpenAI to ensure payment credentials follow consumers across AI-driven shopping journeys.
The traditional linear path of online shopping is facing a fundamental disruption as AI agents begin to handle product discovery and purchasing. Synchrony is repositioning its strategy to address this shift, which it terms "agentic commerce," a model where the point of sale is no longer tethered to a merchant's website.
Maran Nalluswami, EVP and Chief Strategy and Business Development Officer at Synchrony, describes a new landscape where AI agents identify products, compare alternatives, and potentially select payment methods on behalf of the consumer. To navigate this transition, Synchrony has entered an enterprise collaboration with OpenAI. This partnership aims to integrate financing, payments, and rewards directly into AI-native shopping and checkout experiences, ensuring that financial tools are available wherever the AI agent interacts with the user.
The Erosion of Merchant Control
For decades, the e-commerce model relied on a predictable funnel: a consumer searched for a product, landed on a merchant-controlled website, and completed a checkout process. Agentic commerce breaks this chain by moving the discovery phase away from the retailer. When an AI agent manages the search and selection process, the merchant loses the primary opportunity to influence the consumer's journey before the transaction occurs.
This shift creates a fragmented experience where a transaction might begin on an AI platform but conclude anywhere from a third-party app to a physical storefront. For payment providers, this means the "checkout" is no longer a single destination but a fluid event that can happen across multiple touchpoints.
The Battle for the Consumer Interface
This evolution represents a significant power shift in the retail ecosystem. If AI platforms become the primary interface for commerce, the dominant relationship moves from the merchant to the AI agent or the wallet provider. Payments companies that remain siloed within traditional merchant checkouts risk losing visibility and access to the consumer at the most critical moment of the purchase decision.
By embedding its services into AI ecosystems, Synchrony is attempting to secure its place in this new hierarchy. The goal is to ensure that financing and credentialing tools are seamlessly available to the AI agent, preventing the consumer from abandoning a purchase due to a lack of integrated payment options.
The Path Forward
As the industry moves toward this agentic model, the primary challenge remains the standardization of how payment credentials and financing are handed off between AI agents and retailers. While the partnership with OpenAI marks a strategic step, the broader industry must still determine who will maintain the primary customer relationship in a world where a bot handles the shopping. The focus now shifts to whether other major financial institutions will follow suit to avoid being sidelined by the AI-native commerce layer.
