Developed in collaboration with the Bloco Android app studio, the Snowflake Volunteer app simplifies the process of supporting the Tor network. Previously, volunteering often required technical expertise or the use of browser extensions. The new mobile application makes this accessible to any Android user and includes a dashboard that provides real-time statistics on the user's impact, specifically tracking how many connections they have supported.
How Snowflake Works
Snowflake operates as a "pluggable transport," a system that disguises Tor traffic to make it look like ordinary web activity. The architecture relies on three primary components: the Tor users (clients) seeking access, the volunteer proxies who provide the connection, and a broker that matches the two parties.
To prevent national firewalls from identifying and blocking the system, Snowflake employs a technique known as "domain fronting." This method hides the broker's identity by routing traffic through major service providers. This makes it computationally and politically difficult for censors to block the broker without inadvertently shutting down essential global services, such as Google.
The Impact on Global Censorship
In countries such as Russia and Iran, direct access to the Tor network is frequently blocked by state-level firewalls. While Tor has long used "bridges" to bypass these restrictions, the Snowflake project aims to decentralize this infrastructure. By shifting the proxy burden from a few dedicated servers to thousands of ephemeral mobile devices, the network becomes more resilient and harder to map.
