UChicago Launches Master of Science in Applied Artificial Intelligence

The University of Chicago has introduced a Master of Science in Applied Artificial Intelligence (MS-AAI) to prepare technical professionals for the deployment of AI in professional environments. Offered through the Physical Sciences Division and the Data Science Institute, the program moves students beyond foundational theory into the practical application of AI agents and generative models.
The full-time, nine-month graduate degree will welcome its inaugural cohort in Autumn 2027. The curriculum is structured around four core courses and five electives, divided into three specialized focus areas: AI in Practice, Frontier AI, and Performance AI. According to Faculty Director Arnab Bose, PhD, the program is built so that students solve real problems from their first day of class rather than merely preparing for future application.
The Shift Toward Applied AI
The launch of the MS-AAI comes as generative AI and autonomous agents rapidly alter how organizations handle product development and decision-making. While many academic programs focus on the mathematical foundations of deep learning, UChicago is positioning this degree to address a specific market gap for practitioners.
Bose noted that as generative AI advances at an "unprecedented pace," there is an increasing necessity for experts who can translate machine learning expertise into the "frontier of applied AI." This shift reflects a broader trend in higher education to align technical degrees with the immediate operational needs of the industry.

This degree is part of a massive institutional push into artificial intelligence. In 2026, the university announced the Mansueto Faculty of Mind and Machine Challenge, a nearly $200 million initiative aimed at expanding interdisciplinary AI research. This investment spans multiple fields, including law, medicine, economics, and the arts, signaling the university's intent to integrate AI across its entire academic ecosystem.
By focusing on applied AI, the university aims to produce a new class of professionals capable of managing the complexities of AI governance, security, and safety.
