US and UAE Launch First Bilateral Military AI Task Force in Abu Dhabi
Task Force Talon Synapse marks a historic defense technology partnership between CENTCOM and the Emirates, aiming to deploy AI capabilities at unprecedented speed.
The United States and United Arab Emirates announced July 28, 2025, the creation of Task Force Talon Synapse, the first bilateral working group dedicated to military artificial intelligence cooperation between the US and a regional partner.
Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, the initiative will be staffed by approximately 20 specialists from both nations in artificial intelligence, big data, and cybersecurity. The task force is expected to launch formally in the coming weeks.
Strategic Partnership
The agreement was established by Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of CENTCOM, and Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE's National Security Advisor. The partnership follows diplomatic and military efforts initiated over the past year between CENTCOM and Emirati officials.
Admiral Cooper described the UAE as "one of our most capable regional partners" and said the agreement will serve to "rapidly deliver evolving AI advancements to our warfighters."
"Together, we and our Emirati partners share a strong commitment to adopting AI applications that will foster innovation at speed and scale," Cooper added.
Mission and Scope
Task Force Talon Synapse will focus on three primary areas: AI-powered intelligence support, protection of critical infrastructure, and regional security monitoring. The effort seeks to accelerate deployment of emerging AI technologies by combining US technological leadership with the UAE's regional capabilities and strategic position.
Regional Implications
The partnership enhances Middle East security through technology collaboration. By establishing a dedicated bilateral structure for military AI development, Washington and Abu Dhabi are positioning themselves to respond more rapidly to evolving threats while maintaining a technological edge over adversaries in the region.
The task force model could serve as a template for future defense technology partnerships between the US and other Gulf allies, though officials have not indicated whether similar arrangements are under consideration.
