UT System Launches AI Manufacturing Certificate to Upskill Tennessee Workforce
A partnership between UT Knoxville and the Center for Industrial Services scales AI, cybersecurity, and data science training for the state's industrial sector.
The University of Tennessee (UT) System has launched a strategic workforce partnership to accelerate professional education in emerging technologies across the state. The collaboration connects the UT Institute for Public Service’s Center for Industrial Services (CIS) with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s College of Emerging and Collaborative Studies (CECS).
As the primary output of this agreement, the system has introduced the AI in Manufacturing Workforce Certificate. This open-enrollment program is scheduled to begin its first cohort on October 1. The curriculum was developed following a 16-week pilot program conducted in collaboration with DENSO, a global mobility supplier, to ensure the training meets real-world industrial requirements.
Scaling Industrial Education
This initiative is part of a broader UT System effort to respond to the evolving needs of Tennessee's labor market. By combining the academic innovation of the CECS with the established industry relationships of the CIS, the university is creating a scalable framework for corporate training and micro-credentials. While the current focus is on artificial intelligence, the partnership is designed to expand into other critical technology-driven fields, including data science and cybersecurity.

Marty Deschenes, North America Chief Manufacturing Officer at DENSO, noted that while AI is a vital tool for helping teams work smarter, it does not replace the knowledge, judgment, and creativity that employees bring to the manufacturing floor daily.
For the regional economy, this provides a sustainable model for manufacturers to adopt AI, ensuring Tennessee remains competitive in a global market. UT System President Randy Boyd stated that serving the state in these new and meaningful ways is central to the university's current trajectory.
