Waystar Launches Agentic AI to Automate Healthcare Revenue Cycle Workflows

The company is moving beyond AI insights to autonomous execution with new tools for claim resubmission and clinical documentation.

Waystar (Nasdaq: WAY) has launched a suite of agentic AI capabilities designed to automate critical healthcare revenue cycle management (RCM) workflows. The new tools, powered by Waystar AltitudeAI™, mark a strategic shift from AI that merely provides data insights to autonomous agents capable of executing complex administrative tasks.

At the center of the launch is the industry's first autonomous claim resubmission capability. This system interprets payer responses and automatically resubmits eligible claims without requiring manual intervention. Additionally, Waystar has embedded conversational AI into its analytics platform, enabling users to query financial and operational data using natural language. The company also expanded its agentic clinical documentation tools, which can analyze approximately 30,000 data points within a single medical record to generate recommendations for specialist review.

The Administrative Burden

These innovations arrive as U.S. healthcare providers struggle with mounting administrative overhead. A primary pain point is the prevalence of denied claims; while many of these are eventually paid, they typically require significant manual rework to resolve. This inefficiency is compounded by a broader trend of rising patient out-of-pocket spending. By transitioning to an "autonomous revenue cycle," Waystar aims to eliminate the friction associated with these manual processes.

Impact on Reimbursement

The move toward agentic AI represents a fundamental shift from human-in-the-loop analysis to autonomous resolution. By automating the synthesis of clinical records and the resubmission of denied claims, the technology is designed to accelerate reimbursement cycles and lower the cost of administrative labor. The scale of the impact is significant, as Waystar's platform currently processes more than 7.5 billion transactions annually and covers roughly 60% of patients in the United States.

"Agentic intelligence is a critical layer for the autonomous revenue cycle," said Waystar CEO Matt Hawkins. He noted that by combining AI with payer intelligence and connected workflows, the company can identify issues and deploy specialized agents to pursue resolution.

Future Outlook

Industry observers will now watch how these autonomous agents perform at scale across diverse payer environments. While the company has introduced these capabilities to reduce manual labor, the long-term success of the autonomous revenue cycle will depend on the accuracy of the AI's interpretations of varying payer rules. Further data on the actual reduction in review times and analysis hours remains to be independently verified as these tools move from early adoption to wider deployment.
