WellSpan, Hippocratic AI Scale Voice Agents Across Health System

The Pennsylvania health system is embedding AI developers on-site to move from pilots to platform-wide clinical orchestration.

WellSpan Health is expanding its partnership with Hippocratic AI to deploy generative voice AI agents system-wide. The agreement embeds a dedicated team of engineers and clinical specialists at WellSpan's York, Pennsylvania campus to co-develop workflows aimed at reducing clinician burnout.

From Pilot to Platform

The multi-year agreement moves beyond individual use cases to cover inbound, outbound, ambulatory, and inpatient settings across the integrated delivery system. WellSpan serves Central Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland with approximately 23,000 employees and 12 hospitals, though some sources cite nine due to reporting differences between 2024 and 2026.

The embedded Hippocratic AI team will work alongside WellSpan staff to accelerate development of safety-focused agents targeting chronic care management, post-discharge follow-up, and other roles designed to reduce administrative burden.

Ana's Current Footprint

The partnership builds on existing deployment of "Ana," a generative AI agent that already manages more than 160,000 patient calls per month and over 7,000 hours of conversation. New workflows will focus on post-discharge follow-ups, chronic disease check-ins, and proactively closing gaps in care, such as outreach for patients who miss imaging appointments.

WellSpan also plans to trial voice AI tools for clinician triage tasks and launch the "Hippocratic AI Orchestrator" to help care teams navigate patient care plans and health history.

Governance at Scale

"The future of health care will be shaped by organizations that build the culture, governance and clinical capabilities to harness artificial intelligence responsibly at scale," said Roxanna Gapstur, Ph.D., R.N., president and CEO of WellSpan Health.

Munjal Shah, co-founder and CEO of Hippocratic AI, framed the expansion as a shift from scarcity to abundance. "The next phase is about abundance: reimagining what patient care can be when it's no longer constrained by scarcity—designed together, on the same campus, under the same standard of safety," Shah said.

Unverified Claims

Gapstur's LinkedIn post claims Ana has completed nearly 2 million patient interactions with no safety issues. This figure lacks independent corroboration from trade publications or press releases. Core partnership details are confirmed by multiple sources including FC Free Press, HIT Consultant, and AIM Media House.

Why It Matters

This collaboration represents a potential blueprint for how health systems can transition generative AI from administrative assistance to regulated clinical orchestration. By embedding AI developers directly within a health system's campus, the partnership aims to accelerate deployment while maintaining safety standards that could reduce provider burnout and improve patient adherence to care plans.
