Westcomm Regional Dispatch is implementing an AI-driven system to manage non-emergency business line calls. The move aims to triage routine inquiries to ensure human dispatchers remain available for life-threatening 911 emergencies.
The new system, powered by technology from Prepared, will handle common requests such as animal control inquiries and permit information. By filtering these administrative tasks, the center intends to reduce the burden on staff and accelerate response times for critical incidents. Westcomm provides essential dispatch services for the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department and the communities of Longmeadow, East Longmeadow, Chicopee, Monson, and Ware.
Modernizing Emergency Infrastructure
This implementation is part of a broader national shift toward "Next Generation 911" (NG911), a transition that moves emergency infrastructure from legacy analog systems to internet-based frameworks. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has identified artificial intelligence as a foundational element of this modernization effort.
Westcomm is not new to the technology; the center has utilized AI for four years to assist with background transcription of 911 calls, radio traffic logging, and quality assurance monitoring. It has also employed bots to provide multi-language translation services. The current expansion into active call triaging represents a significant step forward in the center's operational automation.
Operational Impact and Risks
The drive toward AI integration is largely fueled by the need for operational efficiency. According to reports, a dispatch center in Colorado that deployed similar AI technology saw administrative calls drop by approximately one-third, which directly increased the speed of emergency responses. For Westcomm, the goal is to mitigate dispatcher burnout by removing the noise of routine queries from the emergency workflow.
However, the transition is not without friction. The use of AI in public safety raises significant legal and ethical questions, particularly regarding the accuracy of automated records. Critics argue that AI-generated summaries or transcripts could introduce errors into official records, which may subsequently impact the rights of defendants in criminal proceedings.
