Wispr Hits $2 Billion Valuation With $280 Million Series B to Expand Voice AI

AI voice interface startup Wispr has raised $280 million in a Series B funding round led by Menlo Ventures, valuing the company at $2 billion. The investment marks a significant pivot for the company as it attempts to transition from a specialized dictation tool into a comprehensive voice-driven operating layer.
With this latest injection of capital, Wispr's total funding to date has reached $361 million. Alongside the financial announcement, the company launched Wispr Notetaker, its first major product expansion beyond its core dictation software. The new AI meeting assistant provides automated transcripts, speaker identification, and summaries. Additionally, Wispr introduced 'Canto,' a new model specifically engineered to improve accuracy; the company aims to reduce dictation error rates from 30% to less than 10%.
The Path to a Voice OS
Founded in 2021 by CEO Tanay Kothari and CTO Sahaj Garg, Wispr first gained market traction with Wispr Flow, an AI-powered dictation application available across macOS, Windows, and iOS. However, the company is now pursuing a broader "voice OS" vision. To support this, Wispr established the Wispr Advanced Interfaces Lab, led by former Amazon Alexa executive Ariya Rastrow, to research new methods of human-computer interaction. This strategic shift comes as the company faces increasing competition from other AI-driven dictation tools, including Superwhisper, Monolouge, and Willow.
Solving the Interface Layer
The $2 billion valuation reflects strong investor confidence in the belief that the future of AI lies in how users interact with machines. According to a company blog post, while the underlying intelligence of AI is largely present, the industry still lacks an "interface layer" capable of understanding a user's intent based on their surrounding environment rather than relying solely on spoken words. By expanding into meeting intelligence and neural interfaces, Wispr is attempting to bridge this gap, moving from literal transcription to a deeper understanding of context.
Future Outlook
As Wispr scales, the industry will be watching whether the Canto model can deliver on its promise of drastically lower error rates, which remains a primary friction point for voice adoption. The company is also exploring hardware integrations, including partnerships with makers of the Oasis ring to enable more discreet dictation. The success of these initiatives will determine if Wispr can successfully evolve from a productivity utility into the primary interface for AI interaction.
